Mr. Diaz was born in Tampa, Florida and grew up in Hall County; graduating from Johnson High School in 1985. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics from Duke University in 1989; and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1992. After graduation, he passed the bar exam in the first sitting, and co-founded the law firm of Sunderland & Diaz in 1992. While a member of Sunderland & Diaz, Mr. Diaz litigated cases in Gwinnett, Hall and Forsyth Counties, and opened and managed a Gainesville branch of Sunderland & Diaz. In 2001, Mr. Diaz and his wife, Blair C. Diaz purchased and renovated the historic Garner/Hulsey house at 616 Green Street, where Mr. Diaz founded The Law Offices of Joe Raymond Diaz, P.C.. Since that time he has concentrated on domestic, civil and criminal litigation in all levels of Courts located in Hall County, Forsyth County, Lumpkin County, and Jackson County. He is a member of the Gainesville-Northeastern Circuit Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia, the Federal Bar and the local Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Diaz is currently qualified as a candidate for the Gainesville City Council.

Mr. Diaz is married to Blair C. Diaz, who is an accountant and President of the accounting firm Blair C. Diaz, P.C.. He has three children: Gabrielle Diaz (10), Anna Diaz (6), and Joseph Diaz (5).
